Go Local!

Hello again,

Yes we're still here : )  I just wanted to give a shout out to all the local farms and different food providers. Since the Salmonella outbreak our business has skyrocketed as have many other local egg providers and farmers markets. Knowing where you food comes from is really important these days and this was a great reminder not only for your local egg industry but for all us to consider where your food is coming from. So thanks to our customers and our community for supporting us and other local farmers.

For those of you haven't tried local produce and eggs yet Henny Penny and the chicks want to encourage you to try your local farmer's market. You won't be sorry!

We're still here!

I'm sure you may have been wondering if Two Springs Chicks is still alive and running? Well we are! Again rehab and recovery slowed blogging. Although farm activity hasn't slowed one bit,Chick Two can attest to that. She's been doing a great job with all the critters and barn work.

The chicks are getting big. A few of the cockerels have already started crowing. We lovingly call them the baby "kevins" if you've seen the movie UP then you understand the reference. If  you haven't seen UP the Chicks highly recommend it!

Thanks for waiting!

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in blogging. I had knee surgery 2 weeks ago and recovery slowed down blogging.

Anyways, things are as busy as ever on the farm. A big thank you has to go to Chick Two who has taken on all of the animal chores while I'm recovering! Thanks! We had our first group of chicks returned and Chick Three is quite taken by them!

We took new profile pictures and since Chick Three doesn't have a profile I thought that I'd share hers here.

                                           Cute right?

Moving Day

No, we're not really moving. But the Chicks and I did set up our little fort last weekend. Here are some pictures and highlights from the move :)

                                          Unloading boxes and crates

This table was actually in our "real" house once

The mug rack is one of my favorite features

I also love the fireplace and our silverware rack

After all our hard work moving in we decided to have a coffee break.

Chick Three made me this, don't you want one?

Anyways, all of us Chicks are happy to welcome the warm
weather and  welcome back our fort. I'm so thankful for my Sisters
and how we can all still enjoy the simple pleasure of a play house.

On a chicken note, our rooster has grown into a fine looking young man, although the name Strut has stuck.

Lucky Chickens!

A few weeks ago I had a sudden urge to bake something new. So I attempted making cinnamon buns. We'll they didn't come out to great. The filling and frosting were delicious but the dough was very plain. It just tasted like a plain white bread dough and was sort of hard. Everyone kindly took seconds, except for Chick Three who had no problem telling me she didn't like them. But the majority went to the chickens who thoroughly enjoyed them!

Leave a comment if you have a better recipe I would be grateful for it
even if  the chickens aren't :)

What's going on at the farm

Well March is almost over, looks like it's going out like a lion too! It's been pretty rainy : )

It's been very busy here. We had a few early goat births and our world has revolved around the new babies since then. We have a little boy goat, well I shouldn't say little he's pretty big for a baby and a little tiny girl. The girl (which we have named Maria) was very weak at birth. She couldn't stand to nurse from her mother so in she came to warm up and be bottle fed. For now she's living in the house so we can care for her. Thankfully she has made through her first couple of days and has improved very much. Picture's will be coming!

We are also about ready to send out our first incubator/egg orders! Chick Three is very excited about having chicks.

Here are some pictures from Sunnier days this month.

The hens enjoying there free time.

This is one of our doe Yearlings, Brigitta.
As you can probably see she is extremely curious.

Hello Spring!

Well March came in like a lion here at Two Spring Chicks. Wind storm ,rain storm, and power outages. But after several days of gray skies Chick Two and I were greeted by this lovely view as we went about our daily chores.
Blue skies are lovely aren't they?

Chick Two will be back today with some more pictures for you!

Meet the new guy!

Last week we went to pick up the newest member of the Two Spring Chicks flock, our new rooster.  The hens gave him a warm welcome.  Well actually that couldn't be any farther from the truth.  They put him in place as soon as he stepped out of the crate.  Although he has made wonderful strides up the pecking order since his first week here.

This is him in what we have called his " time out corner".
He spent most of his first few days here, staring at the wall. (and that is exactly how the hens liked it)

Poor little guy. Here he is hiding under the nesting boxes.
Usually the roosters on our farm have names. In the past we have had very masculine names such as Manly, Tommy,Jesse James and Reggie. But this little feller doesn't quite fit into anything like that yet. He is so funny to watch. He walks like road runner, thrusting out each leg very uncertainly as if he's not sure how they work yet. And listening to him try out his voice is hilarious, cracking and hitting a higher pitch each time. So instead of a big boy name he has earned himself nick names like, Strut, Teenie Bopper, and Road runner  : )

Eggs!

Wow it's been busy here.  We have had a lot of interest due to the publicity Two Spring Chicks has had.  So thanks to everyone we've talked to, and for all your encouragement.  You have really helped us get off to a great start and we are very excited!

I think our hens have been encouraged too!  As most of our regular customers know our hens elected to take a winter holiday in early January.  Laying only an egg or so a day.  Well, the holiday is over and our egg numbers are back where they belong!  As I said I think it is due to all this attention.   : )

Some of the gals were very interactive with the photographers that came out.  One hen seemed taken with the camera and the look of her own picture. Yes, you heard me right, the photographer bent down to show her the picture on the screen and she got as close as she could get, just mesmerized by her own beauty I guess. Thanks to the photographer for taking time to talk to our hens.

Hopefully,  I will be able to get some pictures up here soon.

The Press was here.

After we received our grant Youth Venture sent out a press release and we have gotten calls from a few news papers wanting interviews and pictures. How exciting!

This morning a photographer and reporter came out to visit. Oh what fun! Our photo shoot was a blast! Although we were sporting the muck boots and barn jacket look. Any ways is was a lot of fun I think the ladies(our hens)enjoyed all the attention too.

So be looking out for us in your newspaper this weekend!

Welcome to Two Spring Chicks

My Sister and I were recently awarded a grant from 4H and Youth Venture to start our very own business.

We sell fresh free range eggs year round in our surrounding communities. And starting soon we will be selling fertile eggs for hatching.

No incubator? No problem, you can rent incubators from us for your own hatching experience! We'd like to start embryology programs in local schools, and provide workshops and trainings for community members.

I hope you follow us on our journey as we keep you updated on our business and the many adventures of raising chickens!
